October
21 – World
Mission Sunday – is a special day for all of us who are called, by our
Baptism, to be involved in the missionary work of the Church.
World
Mission Sunday is celebrated in every country, in every diocese and in every
parish — in a remote chapel far out in the African bush, in a predominantly
Muslim or Hindu area in Asia, in a poor village in Latin America as well as the
great cathedrals around the globe. As
citizens of this vast and diverse world, members of the one Body of Christ, we
are at our best when we act lovingly, prayerfully, and generously towards our
brothers and sisters in the missions. This year, as we begin the Year of Faith,
proclaimed by Pope Benedict XVI, we celebrate World Mission Sunday as Missionaries
of Faith.
This year, we ask you to remember
that on October 21, World Mission Sunday, the family of the Church celebrates
that we are “one family in mission.”
Please pray for the people of the missions and for missionaries who
bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to them.
We ask also for your most generous help:
·
$15 – a
week’s support of a young man in a mission seminary in Zambia.
·
$25 – a
month’s help for the formation of a religious Sister in the Pacific Islands.
·
$75 – assists
a local priest in Bangladesh, traveling great distances – celebrating the
Sacraments, while providing concrete help for the poor there, the workers and
their families on the country’s tea estates.
·
$100 – covers
the cost of a desk and textbook for five of the 300 children in catechism class
at a parish on the Galápagos Islands off Ecuador.
·
$500
– provides food and education for a child orphaned by HIV/Aids in India.
Whatever
you can contribute to further the work of The Society for the Propagation of
the Faith will be a great blessing to local Church throughout Asia, Africa, the
Pacific Islands and remote regions of Latin America.
Also,
please join us at our Archdiocesan Eucharistic celebration of the missionary
work of the Church that is sent from Boston.
We will gather on that great day – October 21, 2012 – at the Cathedral
of the Holy Cross at 11:30 AM to honor our missionaries and those they
serve. Our Celebrant will be Bishop
Robert Hennessey and our Homilist will be Fr. Patrick Byrne, SVD. Music will be led by the Ugandan Martyrs
Choir, the Lithuanian Choir from St. Peter Parish in South Boston and the Cape
Verdean Choir of Brockton. Kenyan youth
will lead the Gospel procession. A light
lunch reception will follow. To RSVP,
call 617-542-1776 or email info@propfaithboston.org.
